CHAPTER 6

MIDDLE KNOWLEDGE AND THE PROBLEM OF EVIL

INTRODUCTION

The immense amount of suffering and evil in the world is perhaps the greatest barrier to belief in God. In this chapter, I will argue that Molinism is most effective in answering the most prominent problems of evil. Michael Peterson has helpfully divided the problem of evil into theoretical and existential dimensions.1 While the majority of focus on the subject has been on the theoretical dimension, and that will comprise the bulk of this chapter, we ought to be mindful of the spiritual dimension of unbelief.2 More will be said about the pastoral implications of these issues later in the chapter.
